Welcome to Book Club!

Here I will review books from the nonprofit, marketing, volunteer and management world. If you have a book that you would like to share, submit it below! Feel free to comment and share!

The Heart of a Volunteer

Compiled by Dan Zadra, 2010

The Heart of a Volunteer is a quick read, but by no means a slight read. This book is filled with the best quotes, musings and encouragement from dozens of people from scholars to teachers and figureheads to “characters”.

It is a fabulous resource for uplifting and encouraging quotes. The Heart of a volunteer would make a fabulous gift for volunteers in your organization.

Favorite quotes:

“The effect of one good-hearted person is incalculable.”

- Óscar Arias

“Here’s to our nation’s volunteers:

All work and no pay.”

- Cat Lane

“Goodness is the only investment that never fails.”

- Henry David Thoreau

“We rise by uplifting others.”

- Robert Green Ingersoll

Nonprofit Kit for Dummies

Stan Hutton and Frances Phillips

As with any "for Dummies" book, this is the quick synopsis of the subject. It is, despite the title and stigma associted with the "for Dummies" line, a great tool for those starting out in the nonprofit world that need simple and basic answers. The sheer volume of topics covered and information presented makes it worth the price.

Newer versions include a cd. I always advise buying the latest edition as laws/regulations pertaining to nonprofit organziations change periodically. *

As with any "shortcut" book, the ideas presented are basic; enough to get you started and educated on the subject. You will be well on your way to mapping out your plan for starting a nonprofit organization.

Topics covered:

  • Tips for raising money

  • Details pertaining to how state laws may vary

  • Grants/applying for grants

  • Accounting standards

  • Tax forms/tax exempt status

  • Writing a Mission Statement

  • Marketing tips

  • Many more...

*Please do your research on current state and federal laws in regards to nonprofit organizations in your area. Do not rely on "How-To" and "Self-Help" books on the topic.
